Some Sufi Terminologies in the light of Kashful-Mahjoob

Abstract

Sufism has a great importance in Islam. The term Sufism is used for “تصوف” in western culture, where followers of any religion can take part in this activity but Islamic Sufism has some restrictions i-e only the followers of Islam are accepted in this process of self purity. Many Muslim Sufis played a key role in the spread of Islam and Islamic Sufism all over the Muslim world. Hazrat Usman bin Ali Hujvery is one of the known Islamic Sufi who travelled from Ghazni (Afghanistan) to Lahore (Sub continent) for this purpose.Besides preaching the Islamic teachings, Hazrat Usman bin Ali Hujvery also presented a matchless work in writing a basic encyclopedia of that time on Islamic Sufism in Persian language called Kashful Mahjoob. Later on this book/ encyclopedia was translated into many languages. This article is an attempt to know:1.How much importance has kashful Mahjoob in the spiritual teachings.2.How many types of terminologies of Islamic Sufism are used in Kashful Mahjoob.3.How these terminologies are defined and explained in comparison with the other books written specifically on Sufism or on Sufi terminologies, to gain the objective.
