Seerah Discourses in Tafsir Wazih al-Bayan by Maulana Daud Raz: An Analytical Study

Abstract

The scholarly tradition of the Subcontinent has produced significant contributions in the fields of Qur’anic exegesis and Seerah studies. Among these works, Wazeh al-Bayan by Maulana Dawood Raz holds a distinctive position due to its simple style, reliance on authentic Hadith literature, and practical approach toward understanding the Qur’an. The present study aims to critically and analytically explore the discussions related to Seerah in Wazeh al-Bayan in order to examine how the exegete presents different dimensions of the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and which methodological principles are employed in explaining Seerah-related verses.This research adopts descriptive, analytical, and historical methods. It particularly investigates the Qur’anic verses in which Maulana Dawood Raz discusses the Prophetic biography, moral character, preaching methodology, battles, social teachings, and political guidance of the Prophet ﷺ. The study reveals that Wazeh al-Bayan does not present Seerah merely as a historical narrative; rather, it portrays the life of the Prophet ﷺ as a practical and reformative model for individuals and society. The exegete extensively utilizes authentic Hadith reports and reliable historical narrations to explain Seerah-related themes in a clear and accessible manner. Furthermore, the research highlights that the interpretive methodology of Maulana Dawood Raz emphasizes moral reform, intellectual clarity, and practical guidance derived from the Prophetic model. This study contributes to understanding the relationship between Qur’anic exegesis and Seerah studies and provides valuable insights for contemporary researchers working in the fields of Tafsir and Islamic scholarship.
